World Skills Club at School in TCI gets support from Beaches Turks and Caicos

Presenter, Claude Williams from the Food and Beverage department at Beaches Turks and Caicos (backrow) receives approval in the form of thumbs up from the students in the World Skills Club at the Thelma Lightbourne Primary school.

Students from the World Skills Club at the Thelma Lightbourne Primary School in Providenciales were recently exposed to table setting and dining etiquette, bed making and origami by members of the Beaches Turks and Caicos resort team.

The students were taught by supervisors and trainers from the housekeeping and food and beverage departments during their weekly meeting at the institution.

Academic advisor for the group, Mikilah Forde, shared, “this information from the Beaches team was simple yet very educational. The students enjoyed the creative presentations and their ability to ask questions and get the relevant exposure was very well appreciated.”

Roma Williams and Arnel Devio from the housekeeping department who taught the students different techniques in making their beds and basic origami (towel art) expressed their satisfaction with the level of engagement from the students.  “As a trainer within the housekeeping department at Beaches Turks and Caicos, being able to teach these basic skills to these students was refreshing. The students were eager to learn and even at the end of the session, they were still having fun while practicing their towel art skills that Arnel taught them,” Williams revealed.

Grade four student Joseph Williams shared, “the Beaches Turks and Caicos team showed us how to make our beds so we can now help our parents in the morning. The proper way to help our parents set a table was also very good. We also learn about the different types of glasses and forks at the table. I really love the towel art. They showed us how to make various animal shapes to decorate our beds. It was fun.”

Dining room server, Claude Williams, was tasked with showing the bright young minds the art of fine dining and basic table etiquette. While he explained the setting of silverware and glassware, the students were then allowed, in pairs, to demonstrate what they were taught.

“The students are fast learners. They were eager to demonstrate what they were taught in the session which is a good sign that learning had occurred. Whenever we get a chance to interact especially with children, we ensure that we share with them the dynamics of the hospitality industry,” Williams stated.

Principal of the school, Robin Cox-Foster shared, “this partnership between Beaches Turks and Caicos and our school has been beneficial for the wholesome educational package that we provide for our students. The industry leaders were able to introduce the students to the different areas of the hospitality industry while allowing them to learn and apply the new knowledge.”

Public Relations Manager Orville Morgan noted, “the experience of seeing the children interacting with the trainers was refreshing. The hospitality leaders were able to involve the children in the different activities by introducing them to the craft during their presentations. The children expressed their desire to learn as they were eager to display what they learned. We will continue to have our leaders in the different areas of the hospitality industry do these skills training sessions because these skills are assets that will help ensure success.”
