Voices from the Streets Part 36- What are You Doing About It?

By Nixon Dickenson

In this week’s article, Voices from the Streets, I had the pleasure of speaking with Trevor Forbes a community individual that I have known from childhood.

Trevor always gave me good positive advice and his words of wisdom has helped to shape my values.  Trevor works in the maintenance department at the JAGS McCartney International Airport.  He enjoys doing his job as he believes in the value of hard work. He shared that the young people in this country need to understand the value of a good education and hard work.

He said that hard work does not kill, it helps to make one better by teaching him or her to be discipline. Trevor shared that his heart hurts to see the many lives of young men that have been lost within the past two years due to indiscipline and poor choices. He shared that it is never too late for a turnaround and a comeback. He challenges young people to do something with the life that God has blessed them with and make a positive contribution to their community.

Trevor said that nowadays conversations only seem to be centered around the crime in the country.  However, he believes that there is still a lot of good being done in the Turks and Caicos Islands and there are many others who can get involved in making positive changes in our country. What are you doing about it? is the question that he asks.

Trevor shared that growing up he was given the nickname ‘Scary’ and he made some decisions in his younger years that he is not proud of but has learned from. He admonished the youths not to be afraid of learning and growing and welcoming challenges as this will help them to overcome any difficulties as life lessons is still a great teacher. He believes that we all have a role to play in building the country.

Trevor shared that as much as we would like to place the blame on the youths, the leaders of the community must also be willing to provide them with support and make the time to engage the in conversation so they know their value.

Trevor encouraged young people never to be afraid of speaking up for what they believe in and going after their dreams. He shared that when talking with young people he is often surprised about their views and their solutions.

This is why it is important for leaders to reach the schools and identify youths who have big ideas but their family is struggling financially or they may not have the social systems in place and invest in these children.  If we believe that the youths are the future of these islands then we need to do more to nurture and protect them.

Trevor’s parting words to me was to continue the work of reaching young people through Voices from the Streets. He shared that this platform is giving people from all walks of life and opportunity to let their voices be heard for the betterment of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Trevor had a profound impact on me and many others in the community. His emphasis on the value of hard work, education, and positive contributions is truly inspiring. It’s heartening to hear his belief in the potential for change and the importance of supporting young people.

Trevor’s story about overcoming his own challenges and learning from past mistakes is a powerful message for the youth. His call for leaders to engage with and invest in young people, especially those facing financial or social difficulties, highlights a crucial aspect of community development.
