The Turks and Caicos Islands Airports Authority (TCIAA) has refuted a recent media report regarding the status of Norman B. Saunders International Airport in South Caicos.

The TCIAA said the report incorrectly suggested that the airport is not approved for international commercial service, particularly in light of American Airlines’ rescheduled inaugural Miami-to-South Caicos flight, now tentatively set for March 29, 2025.

In a news release, The TCIAA said that Norman B. Saunders International Airport holds full approvals from both UK and local regulators under Tier 1 Operations, authorizing it to accommodate international commercial flights.

While the airport is fully capable of handling such operations, some airlines—particularly U.S.-based carriers—require additional inspection and certification from their own national regulatory bodies before commencing service to a new destination, pointing out that this airline-specific process is entirely separate from the airport’s existing international operating approvals and should not be misinterpreted as a restriction on the airport's ability to welcome international flights.

“The TCIAA remains committed to the growth and expansion of air service to South Caicos and continues to work closely with airlines to facilitate this progress. The authority assures the public that Norman B. Saunders International Airport is fully prepared to accommodate all international flights authorized by their respective regulators,” The report said.
