In January at the conclusion of the first phase of Reaching the Street Initiative, held at the Paradise Baptist in Five Cays, ex-convict Robert Jackson expressed his desire to work with the programme to save the country’s youth from joining criminal gangs.
On Saturday, that dream was, however, dashed when Jackson was gunned down not far from the church where he made the pledge to fight criminality. He was killed outside the gate of the Enid Capron Primary School in broad daylight.
A report from the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force stated: “Homicide detectives of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force are actively investigating a murder in Five Cays, Providenciales. Initial reports indicate that shortly after midday, the Police Control Room received several calls stating that gunshots were being heard in the area of the Community Center. RT&CIPF officers responded to the given location and found the lifeless body of a male with what appeared to be gunshot wounds about the body.”
Jackson became the latest of three murders in less than 24 hours in that community. Two men were shot to death in Five Cays on Friday Night by unknown assailants.
According to the police, just after 11 pm, the Police Control Room received what it described as distressing reports of gunshots in the area. Officers and medical personnel were dispatched to the scene, and upon arrival, discovered the lifeless body of a man lying in a pool of blood.
The police said another male, who also sustained gunshot wounds, was rushed to the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after 5 am Saturday.
The identities of those two victims were not immediately released by the authorities.
“Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the relatives and friends of the deceased. We pray that God grants them the strength to endure this challenging period. The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF) condemns these senseless acts of violence in the strongest terms. Such heinous and callous acts have no place in our community,” Commissioner of Police Edvin Martin said in a release.
He continued: “We are unwavering in our commitment to bringing those responsible to justice. The circumstances and motive behind these killings remain unclear at this stage of our investigation. We are diligently working to uncover all details and clarify this tragic event. In these trying times, the public's cooperation is invaluable.
“Therefore, I am making a heartfelt appeal to anyone who may have information about this incident to come forward. Your assistance is crucial in helping us ensure that justice is served.”
Since the incidents, the police have increased their presence in that community.
