Three pregnant women were among the 277 Haitian migrants intercepted at sea late Friday night as law enforcement authorities carried out a decisive maritime operation to curb illegal migration.
Shortly after 10:00 p.m. on March 14, 2025, the United States Air Support (USAS) Unit detected an unauthorized vessel approximately 15 miles south of Providenciles. The vessel, carrying 234 males and 43 females, including the expectant mothers and one minor, was swiftly reported to the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RT&CIPF) Marine Branch.
Acting with urgency, the Marine Branch deployed two response vessels to intercept the craft. With a well-coordinated effort between the USAS and the Marine Branch, the vessel was successfully stopped, ensuring the safety of those on board.
To aid in the transport of the intercepted migrants, a Royal Bahamas Defence Force vessel conducting patrols under the Shiprider Agreement was diverted to assist. The individuals were taken to Providenciales, where they were handed over to the Turks and Caicos Islands Border Force with additional support from the TCI Regiment for processing and further action.
Authorities underscored the risks associated with such perilous journeys, particularly for vulnerable individuals such as pregnant women and minors. The RT&CIPF praised the swift response and coordination of the agencies involved, reaffirming their commitment to border security and public safety.
Officials issued a stern warning to those engaged in human smuggling operations, urging them to cease such illegal activities. They also cautioned against attempts to enter the Turks and Caicos Islands unlawfully, reiterating the stringent measures in place to prevent unauthorized entry.
The RT&CIPF is appealing to the public to report any information regarding illegal entry into the territory. Individuals can contact the nearest police station, dial 911, or reach the Serious Crime Unit at 231-1842. Anonymous reports can also be made through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477 or via the Crime Stoppers P3 app.
