Police Commissioner Takes 6 weeks Leave of Absence; Announces Former Jamaica Deputy Commissioner as a Temporary Deputy

Police Commissioner Edvin Martin

The Commissioner of Police for the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force, Edvin Martin, has announced a six-week leave of absence due to unavoidable personal reasons.

He also announced that former Deputy Commissioner of Police in the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Fitz Baily, to be as the second deputy commissioner of police. Longstanding crimefighter Rodney Adams is currently the deputy commissioner of police. It is likely that he would be the number one deputy commissioner in Martin’s absence.

In a letter addressed to his colleagues dated October 1, 2024, Commissioner Martin expressed his gratitude for their dedication and hard work, ensuring the safety and security of the Turks and Caicos Islands amidst ongoing criminal challenges.

Commissioner Martin stated that the Force Executive Team has been fully briefed and will maintain the strategic goals of the organization, as well as ensure the welfare of all staff, during his absence. Acting arrangements have been made to ensure a smooth continuation of operations.

Fitz Bailey

“To provide further resilience, Mr. Fitz Bailey will temporarily serve as the second Deputy Commissioner of Police, effective from Monday, October 7, 2024. Mr. Bailey, formerly Deputy Commissioner of Police from the Jamaica Constabulary Force, brings over 40 years of experience in policing, including expertise in crime prevention, investigations, tackling gang violence, and public safety,” Martin said in the correspondence.

In his message, Commissioner Martin emphasized the importance of collective effort and encouraged all colleagues to continue giving their best to the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands. The Commissioner concluded by expressing his trust in the team's ability to support one another and continue their service to the community.

The appointment of Mr. Fitz Bailey is expected to bolster the Police Force's capacity to tackle crime and enhance public safety during this transitional period.
