The People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) has officially filed two petitions challenging the results of the February 7 General Election, citing voting irregularities identified by the party’s legal team.
The petition was filed late Friday afternoon in the Supreme Court in Providenciales.
National Chairman Ezra Taylor confirmed to NewslineTCI that the petitions focus on alleged anomalies in the Blue Hills district and the overall election process nationwide.
“We believe there were a number of persons in Blue Hills who may have been confused about the ballot, which led to discrepancies in how they voted,” Taylor explained. “During recounts, our candidates observed that some voters appeared to have voted along party lines for at-large candidates but failed to cast votes for district candidates.”
Taylor also pointed to broader concerns regarding the ballots used across the country.
“There were some challenges with the ballot nationwide, and we are asking the courts to review the matter and determine if any actions need to be taken,” he added.
The PDM has entrusted its legal challenge to attorney Alvin Garland, who will provide further details on the legal grounds of the petition. Taylor refrained from elaborating on the specific legal arguments, deferring to Garland for clarification.
Efforts to reach Garland, who could have provided a more detailed and intricate discourse on the matter, has been unsuccessful so far.
The party’s legal challenge is rooted in their assertion that electoral inconsistencies may have impacted the final results. While the specifics of the legal framework remain under review, the PDM is hopeful that the courts will address the concerns raised. According to sources close to the matter, the party’s legal team has identified procedural missteps that may not have adhered to election laws.
The source said many in the party have voiced their concerns about the integrity of the electoral process, with some calling for a thorough investigation into the alleged irregularities.
“This is about ensuring that every vote is counted correctly, and that the election was conducted fairly,” one supporter stated. “We want transparency and fairness in our democracy.”
If the court finds merit in the PDM’s claims, potential remedies could include fresh elections.
The court could hear the petition PDM’s as early as next Monday. It is not clear when the PNP will file their petition.
