The People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) has responded to a statement it attributed to former Premier Mike Misick about PDM’s relationship with Haitians.
The response, which is attributed to National Chairman Ezra Taylor, referred to Misick as desperate. The following is the PDM’ Response to the statement:
The People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) vehemently condemns the recent unfounded and disgusting remarks made by former Premier Michael Misick at a recent PNP rally, stating that the PDM does not like Haitians. These claims are not only patently false but also represent a desperate attempt by Michael Misick to sow discord and divert attention from his own tarnished legacy.
The people of the Turks and Caicos Islands must be reminded of Michael Misick's notorious tenure, which has left an indelible stain on the reputation of our nation. His administration was marred by rampant corruption, leading to his resignation in 2009 amid overwhelming evidence of systemic misconduct.
Michael Misick and his associates were implicated in the illicit sale of Crown land, accepting bribes, and defrauding the government, actions that resulted in the suspension of our islands' self-governance and the imposition of direct rule by the United Kingdom—a humiliating chapter in our nation's history.
Following his resignation, Michael Misick fled the jurisdiction to evade justice, only to be apprehended in Brazil in 2012 after an international manhunt. His extradition and subsequent legal battles have been a protracted saga, with trials and proceedings that have dragged on for years, further jeopardising the image of our beloved islands. Given this egregious track record,
Misick's recent attempts to cast aspersions on the PDM are not only hypocritical but also a blatant effort to rewrite history and manipulate public sentiment. His divisive rhetoric seeks to fracture the harmonious fabric of our multicultural society for his own self-serving purposes.
What is even more concerning is the PNP’s love affair with Michael Misick and his continued influence over the leadership of that party which can only be described as a puppet master pulling the strings of Washington Misick and driving the hateful, divisive, and dishonest campaign of a party desperately trying to hold on to the reigns of power slipping from their hands.
Such desperation in these last few days of the campaign only demonstrate that the PNP’s last four years in government was a complete failure; with no record to run on, the PNP has no choice but to engage in gutter politics, lies, and smears. Such a strategy led by Michael Misick is yet another reason to completely reject the PNP at the polls on February 7th.
The PDM has consistently championed inclusivity, unity, and the upliftment of all communities within the Turks and Caicos Islands. Our policies and initiatives are designed to foster economic empowerment, social cohesion, and equal opportunities for every resident, irrespective of their heritage or background.
This is the platform on which our campaign is built, and we will continue to share this message of hope for a brighter future for all the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands under the leadership of the Hon. Edwin Astwood and this competent, qualified and committed team of men and women who will prioritize the needs of the people.
We urge all Turks and Caicos Islanders to overwhelmingly reject Michael Misick’s attempts to deflect from his own misdeeds and his cynical ploys to incite division. The future of the Turks and Caicos Islands depends on our collective commitment to integrity, accountability, and unity. On February 7th, vote for the PDM down the line because your future is our priority.
