A police officer was injured early this morning during a high-risk confrontation with armed suspects in Kew Town, Providenciales.
The incident unfolded around 12:09 AM when a police patrol team observed a black Nissan Note driving without its headlights.
The officers activated their flashing lights, signaling the vehicle to stop. Initially, the Nissan slowed down, but as the officers exited their vehicle, the suspect vehicle suddenly accelerated, ramming into the police jeep and injuring one of the officers.
As the officers tried to return to their vehicle, they heard gunfire emanating from the fleeing Nissan Note. Despite the injured officer’s condition, he and his colleagues engaged in a high-speed pursuit, which ended on Bay Road in Blue Hills.
When the vehicle came to a stop, two male suspects exited. One suspect, armed with a handgun, aimed it toward the pursuing officers while attempting to flee alongside his accomplice. An officer responded by taking evasive action and firing in the direction of the gunman. Despite efforts to apprehend them, both suspects managed to escape.
The injured officer was transported to a medical facility for urgent care and is currently in stable condition.
Acting Commissioner Fitz Bailey issued a strong statement condemning the incident.
“I unequivocally condemn the brazen and cowardly attack on our police officers who were simply doing their duty,” Bailey said. “This violent act is not just an attack on the RTCIPF in the lawful execution of their duties; it is an attack on the safety, security, and order of our communities.”
He further highlighted the daily risks officers face.
“Our officers put their lives on the line daily, stepping into dangerous and unpredictable situations to uphold the law and protect our people. This is a high-risk job, yet these brave men and women continue to serve with unwavering dedication,” Bailey continued.
Bailey assured the public that law enforcement would not be deterred by such criminal acts.
“Let this be a clear message: The RTCIPF will not allow criminals to believe they can act with impunity. We will continue to stand firm against those who threaten the peace and security of our islands. I implore my officers to remain firm and decisive when confronted by these vicious elements in society whilst ensuring that their actions are always within the framework of the law,” the acting police commissioner further noted.
