Michael Selver, a 39-year-old man from Five Cays, Providenciales, has been granted bail after being charged with sexual activity involving a child under the age of 16.

Selver appeared in court on Monday, September 9, where the judge ordered him to return on November 1, 2024, for further proceedings in the case.

Selver was granted bail in the amount of $5,000 with one surety. A key condition of his bail is that he is prohibited from contacting the victim or any member of her family, ensuring the safety and privacy of those involved.

The charges against Selver were brought by officers from the Safeguarding and Public Protection Unit (SPPU) following an investigation into an alleged incident that took place in July 2023. After gathering evidence, the SPPU formally charged Selver on Tuesday, September 3, 2024.

The case has raised concerns within the community about child protection and the importance of promptly reporting suspected abuse. The Safeguarding and Public Protection Unit has reiterated the critical need for individuals to report any suspicions of child abuse or any allegations of abuse as soon as they arise. The SPPU outlined several ways to report concerns, emphasizing that all reports will be handled with the utmost sensitivity and confidentiality.

Residents who suspect child abuse are encouraged to:

Report the matter to the nearest police station.

Contact the Safeguarding and Public Protection Unit at 232-6696.

Reach out to the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) at 338-4013.

The SPPU stressed that protecting vulnerable children from harm is a top priority and that the community plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of minors. By reporting any suspected abuse, citizens can help authorities take swift action and prevent further harm.

The charges against Selver have drawn public attention, with many expressing shock and concern about the safety of children in the community. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance when it comes to protecting minors from harm and ensuring that justice is served in cases of abuse.

As the legal proceedings continue, the court will determine the full extent of the allegations and the appropriate legal response. In the meantime, the authorities have made it clear that they will remain steadfast in their commitment to safeguarding children and ensuring that those who harm minors are held accountable.

The outcome of the trial is expected be closely watched by members of the public and child protection advocates, as the case underscores the ongoing need to prioritize the protection of children in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

For now, the conditions of Selver’s bail are in place to ensure that the victim remains safe, and the community is reminded that everyone has a role to play in safeguarding children from harm.
