In a heartwarming collaboration, LoveSmart Inc. and the Amani Youth Foundation recently organized a workshop aimed at empowering at-risk youth, particularly young girls, on issues of self-esteem, self-worth, setting boundaries, and recognizing healthy relationships.
This transformative event took place in both Grand Turk and Provo and was met with enthusiasm and receptiveness from the young participants.
Dr. Cutella Talbot, the driving force behind the Amani Youth Foundation, shared that the event was born out of a serendipitous meeting with Ms. Valerie Williams of LoveSmart Inc., and their shared passion for community upliftment. Together, they designed a program tailored to the needs of young teenagers, with a primary focus on girls. The overarching goal was to equip these young minds with knowledge and wisdom that could positively impact their lives for years to come.
The workshops featured a series of engaging activities, allowing the youth to absorb valuable insights and lessons. After the event, participants were asked about their takeaways, and their ability to articulate newfound knowledge and lifelong lessons left organizers, including Talbot, feeling immensely satisfied.
Talbot emphasized the importance of holistic growth, helping young people understand their identities and their life purposes.
According to Talbot, to add a touch of inspiration and relatability, the first lady of the Turks and Caicos Islands, Delthia Russell-Misick, and her daughter Danya Russell, who was recently crowned Miss Teen Grand Turk, graced the occasion.
“Her (Delthia Russeell-Misick) background as a former beauty queen and her daughter's recent success in the Miss Teen Grand Turk pageant made her a fitting role model for young people, stressing the importance of self-worth and self-confidence,” Talbot said.
Mrs. Barbara Butterfield-Jervis, a stalwart in youth work, was also present, offering her wisdom and inspiration to the eager participants. According to Talbot, Jervis has long been an inspiration to many young people across the community, including her.
While the event was initially targeted at young ladies, according to Talbot, it evolved to include young boys who expressed interest.
“LoveSmart Inc. and the Amani Youth Foundation saw this as an opportunity to extend their support to the entire family unit, recognizing that sometimes the whole family needs empowerment,” Talbot said.
She added: “Looking ahead, Ms. Valerie Williams is planning to return in September or October to engage with schools and young males and females across the islands. Her mission extends beyond gender, and her aim is to inspire and educate all young people.
“The success of this event would not have been possible without the generous support of sponsors, including Projetech, Grace Bay Club, Evette Seymour, Delicious Dishes, H. J. Robinson High School, Edward Gartland Youth Center, Kishco, First Caribbean Bank, Faye Forbes, LoveSmart Inc, Star Productions, and 88.5 The Beat. The organizers also expressed their gratitude to the volunteers who dedicated their time to make this event a reality.
“The LoveSmart Inc. and Amani Youth Foundation collaboration serves as a shining example of how community organizations can come together to empower and uplift the next generation, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence they need to navigate life successfully. Their commitment to inclusivity and support for both young girls and boys demonstrates a dedication to the holistic well-being of the community's youth.”
