On November 30, 2024, the Wheeland community, alongside government officials and residents from across the Turks and Caicos Islands, celebrated a historic milestone: the groundbreaking ceremony for the new home of the annual Wheeland Fish Fry.
The event marked the beginning of a new private-sector partnership with Windward Development to create a vibrant venue that will not only host the iconic fish fry but also provide a space for local entrepreneurs and boost tourism in the less-visited parts of the island.
Windward Development's partners, Kyle Smith and Ivor Stanbrook, expressed their excitement for the project. Smith, a local resident, shared his heartfelt connection to the community, saying, "As a son of the soil who grew up in a close-knit community, I understand the true value and need for connection and belonging. This project is about the people of Wheeland—it's an honor to contribute to something that brings us all together."
The new venue is a key part of the larger Wheeland Master Plan, aimed at providing safe and welcoming spaces for both residents and visitors. Smith emphasized that the project is expected to be completed swiftly, ideally within six months.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Physical Planning and Infrastructure Development, Hon. Jamell Robinson, expressed his gratitude for the collaboration, stating, "It was a pleasure to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony for the new home of the Wheeland Fish Fry. I’d like to thank Hon. Knowles and Windward Development for partnering with the Planning Department to make this dream a reality!"
The groundbreaking ceremony coincided with the 3rd Wheeland Fish Fry, which was a tremendous success. The event offered a lively mix of local cuisine, music, sweet treats, and a joyful atmosphere, bringing together both the young and young at heart.
The celebration was made possible with the support of many, including the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force, who provided security through their new mobile command unit, as well as local vendors, artists, and volunteers.
The Wheeland Fish Fry #4 is already being eagerly anticipated for early 2025.
