Her Excellency Governor Deleeni Selveratnam recently visited the Salt Rakers Aquatic Club to engage with children about the vital importance of swimming and water safety.
Governor Selveratnam’s visit was not only inspiring but also timely, as July 25th marks World Drowning Prevention Day.
Benneth Williams of the Salt Rakers Aquatic Club stated that in the Turks and Caicos Islands, swimming is a crucial life skill. But unfortunately, many people here still do not know how to swim, making it essential for swimming to be a part of everyone's life goals.
During her visit, Governor Selveratnam shared her own passion for swimming, revealing that she swims every morning to stay fit and healthy.
Williams said the Salt Rakers Aquatic Club is immensely grateful for the Governor’s visit, noting that her words of encouragement and personal anecdotes about the benefits of swimming left a lasting impression on the children.
"We learned a lot from her, and her enthusiasm for the sport has surely inspired many young swimmers of Salt Rakers Aquatic Club," said a club spokesperson.
Governor Selveratnam's engagement highlights the importance of promoting swimming skills and water safety, especially in a region where aquatic activities are a significant part of life. Her visit underscores a community-wide effort to prevent drowning and promote a healthy, active lifestyle through swimming.
According to Williams: “As we observe World Drowning Prevention Day, the Governor's visit serves as a reminder of the importance of water safety education and the need for everyone to learn to swim. Thank you once again, Governor Selveratnam, for your time and dedication to promoting swimming in our community.”
