A fire of unknown origin at the Chalk Sound Police Station on Providenciales late Monday night has forced operations at that outpost to cease and relocate to Grace Bay on the island.
The police reported that the blaze was noticed at about 10:22 pm, and fire responders were called. Fire and Rescue managed to put out the fire before it could spread to other parts of the building.
The police said they managed to clear the building of all its prisoners and staff, resulting in no reports of injuries.
“Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire at the Chalk Sound Police Station, reported to the Police Control Room on Monday, September 20, 2021, at around 10:22 pm. All staff and prisoners were safely relocated. There were no injuries reported in this incident,” a news release from the police stated.
The damage was not readily noticed from the outside of the building when NewslineTCI visited the facility on Tuesday. About half-dozen officers were seen milling around outside the building, awaiting news from the authorities as to their next move.
Just after midday, a notice of relocation was announced by the police via its communication arm.
“Due to a fire incident at the Chalk Sound Police Station, effective Wednesday, September 22nd, 2021, all policing service will be provided at the Grace Bay Police Station until further notice.
“Please do not hesitate to get in touch with the Grace Bay Police Station on 941-5891 for more information and assistance,” the notice indicated.
In the meantime, the police said so far, the fire appears non-arson in nature.
