
The Turks and Caicos Islands Border Force has reinforced its trade compliance efforts, recovering an additional $1,389,347.71 in unpaid customs duties and fees from five major importers between September 2024 and January 2025.
This latest effort brings the total amount collected through compliance initiatives to $1,752,539.11 from May 2024 to February 2025.
The Border Force did not name the rogue entities.
With stricter enforcement strategies, Border Force ensures that customs duties are collected accurately, prevents fraudulent activities such as undervaluation and misclassification, and fosters fair competition among businesses. These measures, according to the Border Force, are vital in protecting the economic integrity of the Turks and Caicos Islands by preventing revenue losses and ensuring adherence to trade regulations.
Director General Emilio Seymour highlighted the significance of regulatory compliance, stating, "Our intensified enforcement measures have yielded substantial financial benefits for the Turks and Caicos Islands. Compliance with customs regulations is not only a legal obligation but an essential investment in a stable and thriving trade environment."
Importers are reminded that submitting false declarations can result in severe consequences. Those found guilty may be held liable for unpaid duties, have their goods confiscated, and face fines of up to $20,000 or imprisonment for up to two years. These penalties apply to both paper and electronic customs submissions.
Additionally, the public is cautioned against attempting to import restricted items, including controlled substances, firearms, offensive weapons, indecent materials, and certain plant, food, or animal products. Violators could face fines of up to $50,000 and/or imprisonment.
Seymour said the Border Force remains committed to promoting compliance and transparency through collaboration with customs brokers and importers. he noted that, by investing in training programs and resources, the agency aims to assist businesses in understanding their obligations, reducing disruptions, and improving the efficiency of customs processes.
